Compare the2026 Subaru OutbackVS 2026 Buick Envision

The Outback has standard Whiplash-Reducing Front Seats, which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash-Reducing Front Seats system allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Envision doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Subaru Outback achieved a “Good” rating - the highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Buick Envision has not been tested.

To deliver safety and visibility under dusty conditions the Subaru Outback’s backup monitor has a standard rear washer to keep the view clear. A camera washer system is only offered on some models of the Buick Envision.

The Outback’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Envision doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Outback and the Envision have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The Subaru Outback has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2026 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test, and a “Good” score in the revised vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention test. The Envision has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2026.

The Outback’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Envision’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Subaru vehicles are more reliable than Buick vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Subaru second in overall reliability. Buick is ranked 8th.

The Outback XT/Wilderness’ standard 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder produces 32 more horsepower (260 vs. 228) and 19 lbs.-ft. more torque (277 vs. 258) than the Envision’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

The flat cylinder configuration of the boxer engine in the Outback lowers its center of gravity, enhancing handling stability (That’s why Porsche uses boxer engines.). The Envision doesn’t offer a boxer engine configuration.

On the EPA test cycle the Outback 2.5i 2.5 DOHC flat-4 gets better fuel mileage than the Envision (25 city/31 hwy vs. 22 city/28 hwy).

The Outback has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision (18 vs. 16.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Outback has a standard locking fuel door which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Envision. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

The Outback has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Envision doesn’t offer a CVT.

The Outback Wilderness has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Envision; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

For better maneuverability, the Outback’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the Envision’s (36.5 feet vs. 38 feet).

The Outback has 11.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Envision (112.3 vs. 100.4).

The Outback has 1.4 inches more front headroom, 2.6 inches more front legroom, 1.2 inches more front shoulder room, 1.6 inches more rear headroom, .2 inches more rear legroom, 7.7 inches more rear hip room and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Envision.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Outback’s rear seats recline. The Envision’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Outback has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Envision with its rear seat up (34.6 vs. 25.2 cubic feet). The Outback has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Envision with its rear seat folded (80.5 vs. 52.7 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the Outback’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Envision doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Outback. The Envision doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Outback’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Envision’s (2700 vs. 1500 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Buick Envision is only 1500 pounds. The Outback offers up to a 3500 lbs. towing capacity.

The engine in the Outback is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Envision. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Subaru service is better than Buick. J.D. Power ranks Subaru third in service department satisfaction. With a 18% lower rating, Buick is ranked 9th.

The Outback’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Envision’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Outback’s exterior PIN entry system. The Envision doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its OnStar® can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

The Outback’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Envision’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Outback to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Envision doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Both the Subaru Outback and Buick Envision offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The Outback offers optional power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Envision’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

According to iSeeCars.com the 2026 Subaru Outback retains 56.65% of its original value after 5 years, significantly more than the 46.68% resale value of the 2026 Buick Envision after five years, which can save the Subaru’s owner up to $6460 in depreciation.
